Thermal Energy Storage
This is a technology that stocks thermal energy by heating or cooling storage medium so that the stored energy can be used at a later time for heating applications and power generation. TES systems are used in building and in industrial processes.
How can thermal energy storage benefit your business?
Cost avoidance of high energy periods.
Avoid higher rates of energy usage.
Capture energy that would normally be wasted.
How phase changing materials work
Storage mediums used in thermal energy storage use materials that are known as phase changing materials (PCM's). PCM's transition between one state of matter to another, e.g. from solid to a liquid, in doing so they either absorb thermal energy or release thermal energy for use. SHEco works closely with a number of both academic and commercial partners to research and develop thermal energy storage technologies.
The ground can act as a thermal store (battery), thermal energy can be stored within the ground during summer months and thermal energy can be extracted when needed during winter months when the heating period is critical.
